Aglaonema 'Stripes'

Long green leaves banded with silvery-white lines give Aglaonema 'Stripes' a cleaner, more linear pattern than mottled Chinese evergreens. The pale bands follow the lateral veins, adding a clear striped effect as each new leaf opens.

The plant grows as an upright clump from short stems. As older leaves settle around the base, the long blades create a neat vertical pattern in the pot.

Striped leaf pattern

  • Hybrid Aglaonema cultivar with clear striped leaf pattern
  • Silvery-white bands following the lateral veins
  • Long oval leaves that can reach around 35 cm on mature, well-rooted plants
  • Upright clumping habit with leaves layered from the base upward
  • Suited to filtered indoor light and warm, steady rooms

Hybrid background of Aglaonema 'Stripes'

Aglaonema 'Stripes' was released as a Florida foliage plant cultivar from a cross between Aglaonema 'Manila' and Aglaonema nitidum 'Curtisii'. The parentage helps explain the stronger linear pattern and long leaf shape.

Aglaonema is an Araceae genus native from north-eastern India to Papua New Guinea. In indoor pots, 'Stripes' becomes a medium-sized plant with long upright leaves and side shoots that keep the base full.

Care needs for Aglaonema 'Stripes'

  • Light: Grow in medium to bright filtered light. Strong direct sun can roughen or bleach the silver bands.
  • Watering: Water when the top 3–4 cm of mix has dried. Keep the root ball lightly moist during active growth.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky, moisture-retentive mix with coco coir, bark and perlite or pumice.
  • Drainage: Water thoroughly, then let the pot drain fully before it goes back into a decorative cover pot.
  • Temperature: Keep at 18–26 °C with protection from cold glass and draughty entrances.
  • Humidity: Moderate humidity helps long new leaves unfurl without sticking at the edges.
  • Feeding: Feed monthly during active growth with diluted balanced fertiliser; reduce feeding when growth slows.
  • Repotting: Move up one pot size when roots press against the pot wall or the plant dries unusually fast.
  • Leaf care: Wipe the long leaves gently so the vein pattern stays clear.
  • Propagation: Propagate by division or stem sections with visible nodes and healthy roots.

Condition cues

  • Yellow leaves with soft stems: Check for saturated substrate, poor drainage or a cold root area.
  • Crisp brown tips: Review watering pattern, fertiliser strength and mineral-heavy tap water.
  • Bleached rough patches: Move the plant farther from direct sun, especially near south- or west-facing glass.
  • Fine speckling or dull leaves: Inspect leaf undersides and leaf-stalk bases for mites.

Household safety

Aglaonema 'Stripes' contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals. Ingested leaves or stems can cause painful mouth irritation and swallowing discomfort. Place the plant where children and pets cannot reach it, and wash hands after handling cut stems.

Aglaonema 'Stripes' stands out for long leaves with clear silver bands instead of scattered mottling.

Wonderful Book for Toddlers and Up!
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
Great book for toddlers or older! I bought this for my 2.5 y.o. and she would request me to read it every night. She would demonstrate some of the techniques described in the book at her own voilition, which was awesome because it showed that a couple methods were 'sticking.' The next step was trying to help her to perform the technique when needed....like when wanting to hit her brother, which is a bit more challenging! The illustrations are beautiful, large, and colorful. There's one sentence that I think is confusing for little ones to comprehend, such as the breathing method you'd use when blowing bubbles or a pinwheel. I wish there was an "as if" in there so it's taken less literally. However, the flow of the book is nice. It goes through situations which might occur, how you might feel, and then the techniques. Love the page that summarizes all the techniques and the 6 strategies in the back for parents. The pages are a slightly thicker than most paperbacks for kids - more durable for sure, which I appreciate. It's written by a child psychologist, so you know it's going to be a book of quality!

Well done
Format: Hardcover
Beautiful book. Big, beautiful illustrations. The reading is easy though some of the concepts may be a little difficult for younger ones to grasp. Though this just leaves a great opportunity for further discussion on all the different reasons for crying. Great teaching tool. The illustrations do a wonderful job depicting these deeper concepts. Readers may find themselves lingering a little bit on each page, after the reading is done, absorbing the meaning of the words and pictures. Very well done.

Sensitively written and beautifully illustrated
Format: Hardcover
Why Do We Cry? is an sweetly illustrated and sensitively written book for young readers. Originally published in Spanish in 2018, this English translation released 7th April 2020 from Kids Can Press is 34 pages and available in hardcover and ebook formats. The book takes the form of a dialogue between a mother and son about why people cry and why it's good to examine and experience negative emotions so we can process them and what function tears (and crying) actually serve physiologically and emotionally. The text by Fran Pintadera (weblink in Spanish) is supported and enhanced beautifully by the nuanced illustrations by Ana Sender. This would make a superlative reading circle, library group, or classroom read for youngsters. There's a short discussion resource at the back of the book which includes some science based information on tears and the physiological functions they perform. Learning to process strong emotion in a positive and constructive manner is -vital- for development. I appreciated that the dialogue was sensitively handled and that the author chose to make the child male was a nice touch. I think that this could be a very valuable book *especially* given our current pandemic world situation. Five stars. Beautiful little book with universal relevance. Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

A thoughtful book to normalize tears
Format: Hardcover
I'm a child life specialist I have heard many parents and providers tell kids (and teens) to "stop crying" or "there's nothing to cry about" or some other variation of that hurtful phrase. I now work with children who have a parent with a serious illness and those experiencing grief. Why Do We Cry? is an amazing resource that is relevant to the majority of situations experienced by kids in my practice. It is beautifully illustrated with images that reflect the emotion in the written content. This book embraces the many reasons people cry without overstepping a boundary by trying to explain or justify the feelings. I love the subtlety of normalizing a variety of feelings and the gentle truth that sometimes we cry without knowing why. I highly recommend this book!
