At 13% nitrogen, it is one of the most concentrated organic nitrogen sources commonly used in gardens, with the fastest release profile of any organic meal.
Nitrogen drives lush, dark-green vegetative growth, which makes blood meal well suited to leafy greens, corn, brassicas, herbs, and lawn green-up, as well as the vegetative phase of tomatoes and peppers. Its nitrogen is bound in protein and released as soil bacteria mineralize it, so in warm, evenly moist soil plants typically begin responding within one to three weeks — faster than feather meal or alfalfa meal, with lower burn risk than fast-release synthetics. It also works as an effective activator for carbon-heavy compost piles.
Blood meal is a soil amendment, not a water-soluble product — it is not suitable for foliar spraying, and microbial release slows sharply in cold soil below roughly 50°F. Because it supplies only nitrogen, pair it with phosphorus and potassium sources for a complete program, and stop nitrogen feeding on fruiting crops at first flower. Its scent can attract pets and wildlife, so always work it into the soil and water in thoroughly rather than leaving it on the surface. Store sealed and dry.
